Christian church leaders call for Bolsonaro’s impeachment

Approximately 370 religious leaders from different churches and Christian movements in Brazil filed a petition to open an impeachment trial against President Jair Bolsonaro.

Among the reasons, religious leaders point to the total absence of government initiatives to reduce the impacts of the pandemic, denialism, contempt, and sabotage of prevention and health policies; in sum; denounce the genocidal policy of the federal government and its responsibility for the more than 200,000 deaths of Covid in the country.

Since President Jair Bolsonaro took office, sixty-eight petitions for impeachment have been filed against him.

Although during the candidacy and at the beginning of his mandate, Bolsonaro enjoyed the support of a faction of the evangelical and Catholic church, now, the crisis unleashed by the pandemic and the mismanagement of it has led to a lack of support and serious questions to his functions as president.
