Criminal groups put the safety of religious leaders at risk in Mexico

Various criminal gangs continue to impose terror and violence in the country. Religious leaders who carry out their activities in areas with high insecurity rates bear their testimonies in anonymity because of fear for reprisals. They continue to report being victims extortion, kidnapping and constant monitoring.

These criminal groups, in addition to seeking control of territories through violence, have taken advantage of the current pandemic by deploying aid to the most vulnerable populations, thereby seeking the support of the various communities in which they have presence and in doing so, they become the de facto authority in the community.

In these situations, religious leaders conducting faith-inspired activities that openly contradicts the ideology of the criminal groups become the target of reprisals.
